I see something different every time I look at this painting.

There’s an owl. A bird that might be a parrot or a penguin, somehow looking rather dapper. Faces appear and disappear. I see hands grasping, hair spilling forward, something that might be a dragon.

Look again and some of them are gone, replaced by something else.

None of this was intentional.

I wasn't painting creatures or figures. I was following the watercolor—adding and removing pigment, working into what was already there, letting forms emerge without deciding too quickly what they were.

That may be what I love most about this piece. My brain keeps trying to make sense of it. It finds something recognizable, loses it, and goes looking again.

I can stare into Elsewhere for a long time. It feels less like looking at a painting than looking into another world—one that becomes more populated the longer I stay with it.
